VASSAR — A 31-year Vassar man surrendered early this morning after an armed standoff in which several shots were fired. Osage County Sheriff Laurie Dunn said deputies responded to a report of a distraught heavily-armed man in a house in the 2600 block of Main Street in Vassar shortly after 4 Tuesday afternoon. One family member fled the house when officers arrived, Dunn said. The man fired shots randomly after the deputies arrived, she said. Neighbors were evacuated from their homes in the area during the standoff. The man left the house shortly after midnight and surrendered to officers. Denver Miller, 31 Vassar, was booked into the Osage County jail on suspicion of criminal discharge of a firearm, Dunn said. No one was injured. Other agencies helping included the Kansas Highway Patrol, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Ottawa-Franklin County STAR team, Coffey County Sheriff’s office and Osage and Franklin counties’ Emergency Management.
