TOPEKA — The deadline to apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program is 5 p.m. Thursday. Applications must be received in the LIEAP processing center or an SRS office by close of business on Thursday. LIEAP offers funds to help qualifying households pay their heating and cooling bills. People with disabilities, the elderly, and families with children tend to be the people who most qualify. Eligibility guidelines are 130 percent of the federal poverty level Applicants must be responsible for direct payment of their heating and cooling bills. LIEAP applications are available at local SRS offices or by calling toll-free 1-800-432-0043 or visit the Web site www.ks-energy-assistance.com.
