GARNETT — The 15th annual trail celebration dinner hosted by the Friends of the Prairie Spirit Trail is tonight at 6:30 at the Community Building in Garnett’s North Lake Park. The “Birthday Bash” begins with a silent auction at 6, before the meal. Tickets are $7 at Garnett City Hall, Archer Insurance Agency in downtown Garnett and at the door. A buffet dinner includes smoked brisket and scalloped potatoes. The first stretch of the Prairie Spirit Trail between Richmond and Welda officially opened on March 30, 1996. The trail was extended to Ottawa in 1998. The last phase pushing the trail to Iola was completed in 2008. The 51-mile trail is the only trail that is a state park in Kansas.
