OTTAWA — Tonight, the Ottawa police will honor some of its own at the sixth annual volunteer recognition ceremony at the municipal court at 6. They don’t necessarily wear badges, but Chief Dennis Butler said volunteers serve an important police role. The civilian volunteers and police reserves perform many duties, such as help operate the summer DARE camp, McGruff Club or serve as security and traffic control for public events; that the department might not be otherwise able to do or attend, he said. Volunteers performed 1,600 hours of service worth $30,000 last year, he said.
