Today marks the first time anyone can remember that a Veterans Day Assembly wont be held at Anderson County High School. Dropping membership at the local VFW and American Legion Post gets the blame, plus many members are getting too old to do the work and veteran officials say that even though the cold war and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan produced a whole new crop of potential members, there’s no one younger involved to take over. Still, Garnett honors their veterans with the “Celebration of Service” early in the summer and place memorial banners on light poles all over town.

Even though a presentation will not be given to the high school students this year, many vets are hoping that the absence of this year’s ceremony at the school will be a wake up call to a younger class of veterans in the area to get more involved so we will never forget
