Newly-elected Garnett City Commissioner, Nate Wiehl, was sworn into office at Tuesday night’s Garnett City Commission meeting, taking the seat as the city starts the new year facing a host of continuing challenges in various areas of its operations. At the same meeting, Commissioner Jody Cole was appointed Mayor and Mark Lock as Mayor pro tem.

One of the issues that will face Weil and the other commissioners this year, will be housing, or the lack of. Garnett is under a bit of pressure to expand housing. With the building of new major industrial plants in Burlington and DeSoto, housing will be needed for employees who may relocate or follow the jobs.

The push for housing development was behind the reorganization of the Garnett Housing Authority Board last year with two new appointments, thought to be more agreeable toward expanding local housing developments. Movement in that direction by the Anderson County Development Agency and the completion of a housing study, produced recommendations for local expansion.
