With bitter cold temperatures moving into the region this weekend, Evergy has taken steps to meet high energy demand and has crews prepared in case of power outages. They say they are ready for the extreme cold and have increased storage levels of fuel oil and coal compared with previous winter weather events, such as 2021’s storm Uri, and, increased ability to transport more firm natural gas. Evergy will have extra staff available for cold-weather operations, taking steps such as keeping coal reserves from freezing, preventing ice from blocking water intakes for steam units and monitoring renewable generation sites for icing.

Evergy is suggesting consumers use these tips to save money during bitter cold weather. First, turn your thermostat down a little cooler, between 65 and 68 degrees. Also avoid the use of electric space heaters if possible, and if used, follow any safety instructions and never leave it unattended. Another suggestion, is turn off all unnecessary lights and appliances in your home and use window coverings to your advantage by opening the curtains when the sun is shining in but closed at other times.
