Two Iowa residents were taken to an Emporia hospital after a man from Ottawa rear-ended their SUV on I-35 in Chase County. The Kansas Highway Patrol says around 7:00 Monday morning, January 15th, emergency crews were called to the area of mile marker 106 on southbound I-35 in Chase County with reports of a 2-vehicle collision.

When first responders arrived, they say they found a Chevrolet Equinox driven by 45-year-old Pete Hornung of Ottawa, had been following a separate Chevrolet Equinox, driven by 70-year-old Gerald Sylvester, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, as the pair headed south in the right lane. Hornung’s SUV ran into the rear of Sylvester’s Equinox, which caused it to veer to the left. Sylvester’s vehicle hit and damaged two sections of the barrier wall as a result. Sylvester and his passenger, 75-year-old Linda Sylvester, of Cedar Falls, were taken to Newman Regional Health in Emporia with suspected minor injuries. Hornung escaped the crash without injury.
