The Kansas House Democrats say that the Flat Tax Proposal pushed through the Legislature last week by Majority Republicans is unfair to the working-class people of Kansas. They say the Flat Tax would provide over 52% of tax relief for the top 3% of earners, leaving the significant majority of Kansans out to dry. The example they give says that according to the Kansas Legislative Research Department, a married couple with two children making $50,000 to $70,000 a year, would see a tax break of only $2.25, while a married couple without children, in the same income range would see a break of only $0.75. Conversely, a couple with an income of $500,000 would receive a tax break 2,566 times greater than a couple with an income of $50,000.

Republicans who support the Flat Tax say it would benefit the economy and the state has enough of a budget surplus to sustain the cuts.

Governor Kelly is expected to veto the Bill.
