It’s Leap Day! The extra day added to the calendar every four years, because it actually takes a bit longer than 365 days for the earth to revolve around the sun. About 6 hours to be exact, so an extra day is needed to make up that time, every four years, right? Well….not actually every four years. The Jet Propulsion Lab in California says that years divisible by 100 do not follow the four year leap day rule, unless they are divisible by 400. In the past 500 years, there was no Leap Day in 1700, 1800, and 1900, but 2000 had one. The next 500 years, there will be no Leap Day in 2100, 2200, 2300, and 2500. But, what do we care, we won’t be around to celebrate. Without Leap Day, after a few hundred years, summer would be in November, Christmas would be in the summer.

What about people born on Leap Day, like my nephew. He’s 36, but will be unofficially celebrating his 9th birthday today. Anyone else out there celebrating your Leap Birthday today? Let us know. We have a post on our facebook page wishing all Leap Babies a happy birthday!
