The Osawatomie Police Department, in an effort to create a safe learning environment, is conducting a series of K-9 searches at Osawatomie High School. The searches are a result of a collaboration between the police department and the Osawatomie school administrators. The first search was done at random Thursday, February 29th. There was a focus on lockers and vehicles on school property. Police say the intent is to increase awareness with the students, that any illegal substance or items that violate school policy, will be addressed according to local and state laws. They intend to conduct multiple searches throughout the school year.

Chief David Stuteville adds that although the searches may cause controversy, citizens and parents have been overwhelmingly supportive of the effort, and that support demonstrates the community’s commitment to creating a safe learning environment for all youth. He adds that throughout his career he has had the chance to work with many school districts, some being more successful than others at balancing the best interest of the students with policies and procedures that may spark controversy. He says all residents of Osawatomie should be proud that their school district takes such a proactive approach to school safety.
