Cows in Kansas and Texas have tested positive for bird flu. Wait a minute…bird flu…in cows? Yep. Type H5N1 is known to infect birds and sometimes people, but now is has infected cows. However, cows tend to recover, unlike birds. Officials at the USDA stress that there is no risk to the commercial milk supply or to the public and, milk from sick cows is not being allowed onto the market.

Last week, goats in Minnesota tested positive for bird flu, also, since mid 2022, outbreaks of the avian flu in U.S. poultry have grown to their highest levels on record, prompting concerns about increased egg and meat prices, and if you have bought eggs recently, you’ll see the price increase. Officials say the bird flu has infected all kinds of mammal species, including polar bears, but did insist that the virus was not mutating to more easily infect people.
