The government’s Consumer Price Index Report for March is getting a lot of serious attention right now because it shows an unexpectedly high rate of annual inflation, 3 1/2%, in the general economy; however, experts say you can’t blame that on food prices. In fact home or grocery prices were actually flat in March with no increase at all. Agriculture Department Economist Megan Schweitzer says that during March, of the 15 major food categories she tracks…. prices went up for nine, down for six:

This left overall grocery store food prices up from this time a year ago, but by only 1.2%. Switzer says some foods are selling for less than a year ago, namely eggs, dairy products, fish, and seafood.
