A Paola High School senior received a huge surprise recently. Kane Houston was presented with a check for $100,000, as he received a full ride scholarship to Wichita State University from the Rudd Foundation. Houston will be majoring in computer science. He was one of 70 people competing for the Rudd Foundation Scholarship. The foundation seeks recipients who exhibit grit, determination and integrity. Part of the application process included an essay about how Houston exemplifies those qualities. He was presented the check during a surprise visit from Rudd Foundation members, in front of his class at Paola High in late March.
He says it was a wave of disbelief as he wasn’t sure how he was going to pay for college and now, with the full ride, he doesn’t have to worry about it. The scholarship covers all four years, books, supplies, tuition and fees. He says he plans to focus on cyber security, as it is a growing field with a huge outlook.
