A new gold rush could be on, but this time, it is an unforgiving place. Mount Erebus recently erupted and it is spewing real gold dust at a rate of about 80 grams a day, worth over $6,000. Erebus is one of hundreds of active volcanoes in….Antarctica. But, don’t sell all your belongings, tell all your friends…and head to Antarctica. Gold dust from Mount Erebus can travel far and wide. Researchers have found gold traces in the air 620 miles from the volcano. According to NASA, it regularly emits gas and steam and sometimes expel rocks known as bombs. It overlooks a research station on Ross Island and has a lava lake in the summit crater and has been active since 1972.
