Former Paola High School track coach and substitute teacher, Chad E. Kelsey, has been sentenced to five years and eight months in prison for sex acts with a minor who was also his step niece. Chief District Judge Amy Harth imposed the sentence after listening to the victim and family members read tearful impact statements during a sentencing hearing Monday, September 9th. Kelsey was arrested last May and originally charged with rape, unlawful sexual relations; teacher with student 16+, and furnishing alcohol to a minor.
The charges allege that between April 1, 2022, and July 25, 2022, Kelsey engaged in consensual sexual intercourse, lewd fondling or touching, or sodomy with the victim. The charge states that the defendant was a teacher or other person of authority and the person who the offender engaged in consensual sex acts with was 16 years of age or older and enrolled at the school where the defendant was employed.
