The City of Garnett is warning residents of a telephone scam brought to their attention by the City of Wamego. A business was contacted via phone and the person identified themselves as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer, telling the employee that counterfeit currency was being passed through the business. The caller convinced the employee to take money to another business, purchase gift cards and supply the gift card numbers to the caller so they could register their money and keep it safe.
Please, please don’t fall for this scam. If someone calls claiming to be law enforcement, hang up, call dispatch and ask for an officer to respond in person. Also, they encourage you to call the Kansas Attorney General’s Office to report any scam, committed by phone or otherwise.
