Today is Earth Day. Since 1970, millions of people worldwide have gathered to push for environmental changes to protect the earth. The first earth day in 1970 led to the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States, including the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency. In 2016, the U. S. chose Earth Day as the day to sign the Paris Climate Agreement into force.

Since its inception, hundreds of millions of trees have been planted, education programs have expanded to 149 countries, educating students on the most critical issues facing the planet. Also, launched in 2012, the “a billion acts of green” program supports and highlights the many ways people contribute to improving the environment, with over 3 billion to date. The first Earth Day is credited with launching the modern environmental movement. Earth Day is now recognized as the planet’s largest civic event each year. The Earth Day 2024 theme is “Planet Versus Plastics. What will you do?”
